Welcome to the 2023 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2023 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:16, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Equestria

I noticed you're working on the Equestria page again! I'd still like to get it up to GA quality (or at least close) but last time I got so overwhelmed with everything that needs to be improved. It's a big undertaking but I think it'll get there. BuySomeApples (talk) 04:34, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

Hopefully, I'll be able to work on that soon! WP has decided to break on me for the past few months (my edit window, like, does not work and IDK how to fix it). Some of the article (or probably most of it) might have to be completely WP:TNTed. Hope to work with you soon! Pamzeis (talk) 14:55, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
That's understandable! I was having a really hard time adjusting to the new look on here until I figured out how to turn it off, and that was almost enough to make me take a break. I guess the good news is the page isn't going anywhere, so we can get to it whenever we can. BuySomeApples (talk) 11:04, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

Hey there, I noticed that you expressed Oppose at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/theleekycauldron 2. I moved it from the Support column to "Oppose" to maintain consistency, however it was reverted because your rationale is seemingly humorous. I just want to confirm if that's the case. Ha ha, yes, it's a joke. If you ever see me unironically opposing someone's adminship for not having built 10,000 prep sets (for reference, the most one user has built is a bit over 9000) block me immediately. Pamzeis (talk) 09:33, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

In the name of a certain gator

Hi. I think I just became part of an edit war with a certain IP address you gave a previous warning to. For some reason they've insisted, without comment, on changing the mentioned sex of Wally Gator. I'm sorry. Their edits were unfounded yet keep returning with no argument, going to the point I consider it vandalism.

Recognizing their history of rejected edits and lack of response on their talk page, I thought of issuing one myself but decided to ask someone like you for advice, to play it safe. Carlinal (talk) 08:32, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

shaylee mansfield

hello, Pamzeis! i had two questions regarding this article and the associated blurb.

  • both the blurb and article lead describe mansfield as a former youtuber, but i was unable to find any mention in the article body that she is no longer considered a youtuber. did i somehow miss the reference? the about page on mansfield's own website appears to still describe her as a youtuber. the most recent video available at the asl nook youtube channel appears to be from two years ago, but there doesn't seem to be any indication there that she has retired.
  • although i think it is fair to say that the disney advertisement starring mansfield's family went viral, i am not sure if it is appropriate to describe mansfield's christmas story videos as viral videos. the blurb and article lead both describe them as viral videos, but the article body does not appear to make such an assertion. in addition, the "viral video" article appears to suggest that, in order for a video to be viral, it has to have had at least a few million views within a week, and none of the videos at the asl nook youtube channel appears to have had more than 300,000 views. is there a good reason why the christmas story videos should be considered viral videos? to be clear, i think they are still very successful videos, and i could never hope to amass so many views on youtube, but i am just not sure if they would be accurately described as viral videos.

dying (talk) 20:59, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

Hiya, dying! Thanks for your comments. Regarding the first point, her website describes her as an "YouTuber turned actress", which implies, at least to me, that she has stopped YouTube...ing to focus on acting. CinemaBlend also refers to her as a "former YouTuber". Regarding the second point, I've amended the article and blurb to exclude the word "viral". Thanks! Pamzeis (talk) 01:49, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
oh, that is a really interesting point! personally, whenever i have previously described myself as an "x turned y", i had meant that i no longer focus that much on x-related things, but i admittedly had never considered the possibility that people might think that i no longer considered myself an x. i don't know if this is a mos:engvar issue, or if i have simply been using the construction incorrectly all these years. in any case, i'd consider the cinemablend article sufficient sourcing for the statement that mansfield is a former youtuber, so my confusion on the previous point isn't really that relevant. thanks for addressing these issues, Pamzeis! dying (talk) 18:36, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Thank you today for the article, introduced: "... she hasn't been around for very long and is probably younger than most of us. So Mansfield began appearing in viral ASL videos as a child and received some media coverage. In 2016, she starred in a viral Disney Parks ad. She became an actress after appearing in films like Noelle with Anna Kendrick and Feel the Beat with Sofia Carson. She has also made a request to Instagram that garnered coverage from Slate, MIT Technology Review and CNET. And finally, this year, she became the first deaf actor to be credited alongside the voice actors in an animated production... at 12 years old!"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:23, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

English grammar.

Please pay some attention to the correct usage of verb tenses in English language. It’s not correct to use a continuous tense(i.e. Present Continuous) in a case like where you reverted me. The Present Continuous should be used to describe a current ongoing continuous act that is being undertaken by the subject, e.g. I’m writing this post to you, not to describe a definite ability a subject possesses. Tvx1 08:54, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Tvx1. I don't think your assessment is correct, because "hearing" is being used as an adjective in this case, not a present continuous verb. (If you were wondering, the adjective form literally means "able to hear".) Grammatically, saying "who is hearing" is the same as saying "who is deaf". From what I've seen, it's a common phrase within the Deaf community (I'm not deaf or hard-of-hearing so I may be wrong) and has been used by several reputable publications. Mansfield has also used "hearing" as an adjective in many of her Instagram posts as well. Pamzeis (talk) 12:25, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, but that is not how that particular sentence is constructed. It really just is a subject-verb construction. In any case, it is confusing and should be avoided. Not every reader is part of the deaf community and thus acquainted with this uncommon adjective usage. My version tells the exact same thing but avoids all confusion. I cannot see what you could possibly have against this. Tvx1 12:36, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
The sentence is a subject-verb-object construction, as far as I'm concerned (I mean, I'm not an expert at what everything in grammar is called so...). (Shaylee) Mansfield is the subject in this case, and the verb is "has". To be completely honest, I find "able to hear" to be very clunky and a bit wordy, but I don't think it's a good use of both of our times to continue arguing over one word, so I'll leave it at that, even if I disagree. Hope you're having a great week so far. Pamzeis (talk) 10:26, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
While it might appear to be such a construction to you, for most people this looks like a present continuous verb constriction and that’s confusing in such a sentence. We just shouldn’t forget that we aren’t writing for ourselves. Tvx1 17:37, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi Pam, I wondered if you had any thoughts about the concerns I raised on the article's talk page? If the article stays as it is, I intend to take it to FAR but I don't want to do that if you were intending to make edits to try and address the concerns. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:19, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Hiya, HJ Mitchell. Apologies for not getting this sooner. To be completely honest, no, I don't plan on making any edits at the moment. I've read through your concerns a few times and have been looking for sources, but coverage seems no different from what it was a year ago and so I'm not sure what I can do. You can go ahead and start the FAR if you want. Hope you're having a great week so far! Pamzeis (talk) 00:55, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello, thank you for the edits you made for the article. I was wondering if you could archive all the sources? This is a little embarrassing, but I don't how to do it 😅 Gained (talk) 13:13, 7 October 2023 (UTC)

I've actually been asked this before lol (albeit back it 2021). Last time my explanation was super long, so I'll try to make it shorter. Obviously, there's doing it manually, but that's no fun. (I did them manually for a few months 'cuz I didn't know and it was a pain.) So I mostly use the InternetArchive tool for this stuff; it adds archives from web.archive.org. So what you're gonna want to do is log in (so click "Log in" on the top right and it'll redirect you to WP and you gotta confirm it and then it's gonna redirect you back to the tool). Then click "Run Bot" (top left) and "Fix single page" on the drop-down, type the page you wanna archive the sources to in "Page title to analyse", check "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" and then click analyse. It's gonna load for a few minutes (depending on the amount of sources) and when it's done that's it! Occasionally, there'll be more to it, but I don't think it's essential (plus, it'll bloat up my reply a lot). If you wanna read about it, it's in my reply to this query in 2021. Hope this helps! Pamzeis (talk) 13:32, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I salute you for explaining to me on how to do it instead of just archiving the article. I will address some comments on the GA shortly. Gained (talk) 13:46, 7 October 2023 (UTC)

Pamzeis, I was hoping you would be able to return to this nomination as reviewer and check the ALT hooks that were proposed since your review. Prep builders haven't been finding the original hooks interesting enough promote, and while the nominator has proposed new hooks, they can't be used until they're reviewed. Thank you very much. A Friend of the Family (TV series)

Hi Pamzeis, I noticed several uncited direct quotations, which according to the Manual of Style should be directly referenced in text. I also noticed two ambiguities; in "Production" --> "Development" we find Broberg but we don't know which Broberg is being referred to; Jan or Mary Ann? I guessed it refers to Jan but as I can't be 100% certain I've tagged with {{which}}, though feel free to untag if you feel no disambiguation is needed. Anyway, good luck with your planned FA nom and cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:34, 12 October 2023 (UTC).
